Different Parts, One Orchestra
More than two decades ago, professors Anna Lubiw and Romy Shioda noticed that many of their students in the Math faculty at the University of Waterloo were accomplished musicians studying in non-music fields. They partnered with conductor Erna Van Daele to establish Orchestra@UWaterloo, giving talented students an opportunity to play in a full symphony orchestra. In 2017, the orchestra became the responsibility of the Music Department at Grebel, with support from the Associate Provost’s office and generous donors. Through this partnership, students can receive academic credit for participating.
“The Orchestra@UWaterloo brings together people from across the university with a shared purpose of creating something together that is larger than themselves,” explained Professor Mark Vuorinen, Chair of the Music program.
That vision of bringing people together continues through partnerships with other musical groups. Last March, under the direction of Daniel Warren, the Orchestra partnered with the Grand River Opera and Waterloo choirs to perform “The Orchestra@UWaterloo goes to the Opera,” bringing instrumentalists and singers together for a memorable performance.
“Playing in the University of Waterloo Orchestra gives me the opportunity to meet many talented and passionate musicians from a wide range of academic disciplines,” noted Engineering student Kevin Wang. “I enjoy the collaborative nature of rehearsals and the sense of accomplishment that comes from working together toward a final performance.”
“We remain grateful to the orchestra’s founders, who, more than twenty years ago, had a vision to unite students, staff, and faculty through the performance of orchestral music,” added Mark. “That vision remains the same today.”
