The spring term at Conrad Grebel University College is often a time for construction or renovation projects. This year, as part of Grebel’s residence renewal projects, the College is completely replacing four of six residence washrooms, marking a major step forward in this capital project.

“We’re very excited that this project is now underway,” said Mimi Browne. “Demolition has begun and we’ll be moving full steam ahead to have everything completed within our tight deadlines.” The upgraded washrooms will include new plumbing and feature modern, efficient fixtures that improve accessibility, sustainability, and overall student experience. An air sourced heat pump will replace a gas fired water heater, which will reduce Grebel’s greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by almost 8%. These steps support Grebel’s Green Team goal to reduce the College’s GHG emissions by 35% by 2030.

Next spring, construction plans include installing residence heating and cooling with high-efficiency air source heat pumps and replacing the remaining two residence washrooms. Donations to this project have surpassed $3.4 million from 158 donors, demonstrating strong support from many alumni and donors toward a fundraising goal of $4m.

A group of Grebel alumni working at the utility data company Power TakeOff have teamed up to fund the heating ventilation and air conditioning for one residence room through the Windows to the Future campaign. Kevin Martin (BES 2009) leads this team and their collective $10,000 gift reflects both their shared Grebel roots and their professional commitment to sustainability. By supporting infrastructure upgrades that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, these Grebelites are helping the College take meaningful action on climate change.

Their group gift aligns with this year’s May 15 Giving Day focus to raise further funds for the Windows to the Future. This Giving Day, you are invited to join other Grebel alumni, and matching gift donors Jim and Goldine Pankratz, in supporting Grebel’s broader plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a more comfortable and sustainable living environment for students.

Between now and midnight on May 15, you can double your impact by giving to Grebel’s capital campaign. Any donation will make a difference in the lives of Grebel students.
