Hart of the Community
For more than two decades at Grebel, Peter Hart has been a consistent, kind presence for residents. As a custodian at Grebel for 24 years, Peter was initially in charge of cleaning the residence wing, where he made genuine connections with students. For decades, Peter has been invested in student lives and their successes.
Peter’s co-workers describe him as an approachable, patient, and friendly person who understands the importance of checking in, saying hi, and keeping up with what is happening in other's lives. He loves making jokes and is good natured about receiving jokes too. His positive attitude and willingness to help make a noticeable impact on the community.
“Peter brings dedication, reliability, and a strong work ethic to his role,” described Devon Grainger, Building Operator. “He greets students with a smile, helps them when they need assistance, and makes sure classrooms are ready for learning each day. His quiet support helps foster a sense of care and community within the school.” One of Peter’s greatest gifts is his attention to detail - he notices what needs to be taken care of and takes the initiative to do so without being asked.
As the custodial team (and the building too!) has grown, Peter took over more of the academic cleaning responsibilities. As his career at Grebel concludes, he is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment throughout the school.
“Peter genuinely cares about the building and the people in it,” reflected Devon. “He brings a sense of calm and order to his work, and he is always willing to lend a hand or offer a word or story of encouragement. His professionalism and good humor make the workday more enjoyable for everyone around him. I've been honored to learn from and grow with him over my time here.”
“Peter is an excellent trainer,” noted Mimi Browne, Director of Operations, “which is no surprise since he has been to teacher's college. One of his strengths in his role has been finding the most efficient way of doing things and his ability to communicate that,” she added. “Peter cares deeply about Grebel, about improving things and keeping things running smoothly, and what will work best for the students and the whole community.”
“Peter has been a joy to work with because of his commitment to keeping Grebel clean and running smoothly and because he is an engaged and caring coworker,” summarized Mimi. “A personal highlight has been years of ‘chocolate time’ in the office - a chance to enjoy a treat, catch up, laugh, and build relationships.”
Peter will retire at the end of October and the entire Grebel community wishes him a well-deserved healthy and happy retirement. He plans to spend more time in his garden tending to his “plant babies.”
