Alison Brooks has been honoured as 2020’s Architect of the Year by Dezeen, an influential architecture and design online magazine based in London, England.
Brooks, a 1988 Waterloo architecture alumnus, received the recognition from Dezeen’s international jury.
The judges said that her company, Alison Brooks Architects, is “conscious and questioning, and adopts a public interest approach and that this is the direction we want architecture to move towards.”
Describing the company as a ground-breaking practice with great ethos, the jury said it particularly likes the way its employees “question both norms and the profession itself.”
Brooks was honoured with the Faculty of Engineering’s Alumni Achievement Medal for Professional Achievement in 2014.
The Dezeen awards, launched in 2018, aim to recognize the world’s best architecture, interiors and design, as well as the studios and the individual architects and designers producing the most outstanding work. This year, the awards received more than 4,300 entries from over 85 countries.
