An alumnus of Waterloo Engineering cites the wealth and variety of expertise on campus as a significant factor in the success of a robotics company he co-founded with three classmates from the mechatronics engineering program.

Ryan Gariepy (BASc ’09, MASc ’12) launched Clearpath Robotics in Kitchener in 2009 with fellow graduates Patrick Martinson, Matt Rendall and Bryan Webb. It was acquired by Rockwell Automation, a U.S.-based industrial automation company, in 2023.

The University of Waterloo’s Pearl Sullivan Engineering IDEAs Clinic ran the inaugural Brookfield Renewable Innovation Challenge, tasking students with designing solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen climate resilience across campus.

The three-day event marked the launch of a new partnership between the Faculty of Engineering and Brookfield Renewable, a core business of Brookfield Corporation and one of the world's largest owners, operators and developers of renewable power.

Researchers from the faculties of engineering and mathematics at the University of Waterloo are working on a joint project that could lead to a new cancer treatment involving the use of engineered bacteria to essentially eat tumours from the inside out.

Dr. Marc Aucoin, a professor of chemical engineering, and Dr. Brian Ingalls, a professor of applied mathematics, outlined their research and the history behind their promising approach in an article recently published by the website The Conversation Canada.
