Two professors from Waterloo Engineering’s Conrad School of Entrepreneurship and Business have received federal funding to support new research into global business and innovation.
Dr. Victor Cui and Dr. Felix Arndt are among 37 University of Waterloo researchers who received more than $8 million in new funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), announced in a media release earlier this week.
Cui, who holds the Conrad Research Excellence Chair, examines how the era’s defining forces geopolitical rivalry and artificial intelligence are transforming business, society and the global order. His project, “The Global Chilling Effects of U.S. Sanctions on Open-Source AI,” investigates whether country-specific sanction policies produce an unexpected, far-reaching effect: chilling AI development across the global open-source community, well beyond their intended targets. The answer carries high stakes for national security, global competitiveness, and the future of AI innovation.
Arndt, the Eyton Director of the Conrad School and an engineer by training, researches entrepreneurship and innovation strategy. His project, “Innovation Ecosystem Success,” explores why the Waterloo region – anchored by Velocity, Communitech and the Accelerator Centre – has become one of the world’s most successful innovation hubs outside the United States, drawing on startup investment data and interviews with founders, investors and policymakers to identify what drives long-term success.
