Prof develops tech for fast breast cancer detection
Waterloo Engineering professor Dr. Omar Ramahi leads a research team pioneering a method to detect breast cancer in women early enough for them to receive life-saving treatment.
The innovative technology aims to be more accurate as well as cheaper to provide than today’s most common diagnostic tools such as X-ray mammography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Test runs have been completed in two minutes and used less energy than a smartphone. It would also be safer than X-rays, which expose patients to high-level radiation that can damage DNA and cause cancer.
Alumni stand out on the Forbes 30 Under 30 lists
At least five Waterloo Engineering alumni have made the impressive Forbes 30 Under 30 lists for 2024.
Peter Gokhshteyn, Kevin Michael, Tom Storwick, Kelly Zheng and Chee Hau Teoh are among 600 young changemakers in North America who have been recognized for their standout entrepreneurial achievements in 20 categories.
Engineering Awards Dinner celebrates alumni and friend of the Faculty
The Waterloo Engineering community came together to celebrate the exceptional achievements of four alumni and an industry supporter of the Faculty at this year’s Engineering Awards Dinner.
Hosted by Dr. Mary Wells, dean of engineering, the event recognized an advocate of applied biotechnology research, a tech business leader, an expert in novel medical devices and stem cell therapy, a globally renowned luthier and a valued friend of the Faculty.

FIRST Lego League Qualifier Tournament
Waterloo Engineering and Waterloo Wellington FIRST Robotics (WWFRO) are proud to host the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Qualifier on Saturday December 2nd , 2023. We will be hosting 18 teams of students aged 9-14 for the arts-inspired Masterpiece qualifying event.
Lights, camera, STEAM! In the past four months, FLL teams have been building and programming their LEGO robots to complete specific missions on a the Master Peice FLL mat. FLL students have also been learning about the role science, technology, engineering and math play in arts and developing innovative ways to create and communicate art across the globe.
Come visit the event for a day of innovation and imagination.

Meditation has been shown to reduce stress, increase balance and stillness, increase awareness, and even expand acceptance and compassion for yourself and others. Each week will vary slightly. “Practices” include breathing, mindfulness, body awareness, earthly grounding, spacial awareness, centring, and more.
Sessions are facilitated from a well-being perspective. No religious affiliation is needed. Everyone is welcome to participate. All experience levels are welcome from advanced practitioners to those who are trying meditation for the first time.
Why not give it a try! Gift yourself with a few moments of stillness to reset and recharge. It’s as true for people as it is with technology as well as people...we can all benefit from shutting down for a few moments and recharging.
This session is open to all members of the FoE community. Please bring your own meditation pillow or mat to sit on.
