About

CIVIC Hack is a free online hackathon from the Future Cities Institute. Attendees at the 2026 State of Canada’s Cities Summit in Ottawa will vote on five municipal challenges, and the winning challenge will be revealed at launch on Thursday, November 12, at 6 p.m. ET.

Teams will build a tool that could help solve it, with hacking running from 7 p.m. ET Thursday to 10 a.m. ET Saturday. The top five teams will present at an online showcase on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET, with $1,500 in cash prizes.

Teams can have one to four people, with at least one University of Waterloo student on each. Teammates can be students at any university, and everyone must be at or above the age of majority. Students from any faculty or program are welcome, and you don’t need to be a coder.

Location

The hackathon is virtual.
