Faculty opening in Societal and Environmental Systems

The Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo prepares students to be at the forefront of design. We are seeking up to four passionate faculty to join our societal and environmental systems cluster. Our unique programs are staffed by interdisciplinary teacher-scholars that work with undergraduate and graduate students to advance broad innovative engineering at the boundaries of societal and environmental systems for designing sustainable global communities. The department is excited to expand our team’s novel approaches in this arena to increase our meaningful participation in solving large-scale complex, even wicked, problems that plague our society.

The successful candidates for these tenure-track faculty positions, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor are expected to conduct scholarship, teach undergraduate and graduate courses and be active in service to the university, profession, and the society. The candidates should demonstrate how their expertise while grounded in engineering is not siloed and may intersect in terms of applications and methods with other disciplines. Preference will be given to candidates who have applied their design skills to real-world systems with innovation and application of systems theory to solving these problems. A vision for the future of engineering design that advances equity and ethics is important to the department which also houses the Center for Society Technology and Values. Industry experience may be an asset.

The candidate’s expertise may be within or beyond of our existing application areas in energy, water, transportation, environment, climate, housing, conflict resolution, or resiliency. Methodological expertise in advanced simulation modeling, optimization, data driven methods, multiscale integrative modeling, multiple stakeholder decision making, remote sensing, stochastic non-linear agent-based modeling, or complex systems would complement our existing team.

Candidates must hold a PhD degree in engineering or a related discipline. The successful applicant is required to have an engineering license for practice (full) or teaching (limited) in Canada or to apply for a Canadian engineering license within the first year of joining the University. Due to program accreditation requirements, all new faculty members are normally expected to obtain the license before the end of the first probationary term. Re-appointment is conditional upon satisfying this requirement.

References are requested but will only be contacted for applicants invited for an interview. The salary range for this position is $110,000 to $175,000. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally experienced candidates.
