Nicole Cao’s journey from art to architecture began at the University of Waterloo’s School of Architecture and has now led her to graduate studies at Yale University. Her experience studying in Cambridge, Ontario, enriched her understanding of architecture as an interdisciplinary field where culture, science, and technology converge.
Combining her drawing skills with architectural study, Cao views architecture as a means of visual exploration and communication. Her innovative project, Solar Steps, which reimagines affordable housing through adjustable thresholds, earned her the prestigious 2023 Azure AZ A+ Student Award, recognizing her creative potential.
Now at Yale, Cao aims to integrate research and theory into her practice, with aspirations to pursue both academia and hands-on architectural work, extending her creative voice into the broader discourse on architecture and social impact. The School of Architecture’s 20th anniversary at its Cambridge campus highlights the support that students like Cao receive.
