Two projects awarded $200,000 in federal funding

Researchers at Waterloo Engineering lead two projects that were awarded a combined total of more than $200,000 by the federal government today.

Philip Beesley, a professor of architecture known for his striking work on living architecture, received $114,176 for a project called the Empathetic Spaces Partnership that involves a long list of co-applicants, collaborators and partners in Canada, the U.S., Europe and Australia.

Bonwoo Koo and Brian Cozzarin, both professors of management sciences, were awarded $89,560 as co-applicants on a project called Capital Structure and Innovation: Canadian Biotechnology Industry.

Campus-wide at the University of Waterloo, $4.4 million in funding through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada was awarded for 22 projects. Across the country, $175 million was earmarked for more than 800 projects.

“These grants enable scholars to address complex issues about communities and societies, and to further our collective understanding so we can build a better future for all Canadians,” François-Philippe Champagne, the minister of innovation, science and industry, said in a media release.
