An online magazine has recognized the University of Waterloo as one of the five most innovative universities in North America and South America in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

Current, a website funded by Distrelec, an electronic components distributor based in Switzerland, ranked UW in fourth place, behind only the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Southern California.

A story on the rankings specifically noted research at Waterloo into the application of AI to health data from wearable devices and the creation last year of the Waterloo Artificial Intelligence Institute (Waterloo.ai), a joint venture of the faculties of engineering and mathematics.

Current focuses on robotics, machine learning, AI, automation and digitalization.
