Introduction to the Data Science Framework and Machine Learning 101

Thursday, June 2, 2016 6:30 pm - 6:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

UWaterloo Statistics Club and Data Science Club are jointly hosting an introductory talk on the Data Science framework and Machine Learning presented by Andrew Andrade. Andrew Andrade's background is in statistical manufacturing and data driven production optimization where he worked for start-ups and companies such as PetroCanada (Suncor) and Facebook before founding PetroPredict.

Industry is being transformed by data-driven discovery and prediction through the use of machine learning, and companies are desperately searching for data scientists to join their ranks. This talk will introduce the basics of the data science framework and leave you armed with practical knowledge on how to use machine learning and data analytics to extract value from data. We will tour the basic techniques in the data science framework, algorithms for data mining (e.g., clustering, regression, classification, association rule mining and recommendation), and basic modeling. The goal of this talk is to leave you with the theory and actionable knowledge on getting started with data science and machine learning while laying the foundation for hand-ons sessions coming up!

Food will be provided!
