The tradition continues on July 14, 2017 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm to celebrate Engineering Day with our incredible community of students, alumni, professors and staff. This year's activities will include a colour throw (wear a white t-shirt!), BBQ featuring the famous 'Boggan Burgers, free treats and refreshments, a photo booth, purpling, The Tool and The Tool Bearers, and so much more!
The co-founders of the world-renowned humanitarian organization Engineers Without Borders, George Roter (BASc 1999) and Parker Mitchell (BASc 1999), will deliver a public lecture titled "Global Impact One Engineer at a Time: Why we Founded Engineers Without Borders" about their journey from their time as engineering students at the University of Waterloo, to the founding of Engineers Without Borders and its global impact, and their careers since and beyond.
Join us at the Student Life Centre in the Great Hall to celebrate your milestone achievement! The reception starts right after the convocation ceremony.
Lecture abstract: A computer networking researcher traveling forward in time from 1985 to the present would be shocked by many things – not the least of which is the fact that people are still doing computer networking research over 30 years later. While some of the terminology would sound familiar, the networks themselves and what we use them for would be totally unrecognizable – yet quite impressive. For those of us who could not afford a time machine, we have observed a more gradual evolution interspersed with the occasional shocking development.
At this fireside chat moderated by Professor Wayne Chang of the Conrad Centre, two of the four co-founders of Flipp Corporation will talk about how they started their company and grew it from four to 400 employees in 12 years, how they initially and successfully identified a problem and solved it for consumers, and how they recently
During this lecture, Sam Emaminejad (BASc '09), Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering at UCLA, will discuss his research of biomarker monitoring platforms, his education and career path, and provide any advice he may have for students for their academics and careers.
Join Katie O'Connor of Ten Thousand Coffees as she shows you how to build your network to support you in your career development and your search for satisfying employment. Through exercises, stories and hands-on tips learn how to engage in effective conversations that lead to your career success.
Students and alumni are invited to participate in an exclusive Office Hour with engineering alumni Jim Vounassis (BASc '94), Chief Operating Officer at Bombardier Transportation!
During this Office Hour, Jim Vounassis will talk about his career and lessons learned, while sharing career advice and insights into the future of engineering, particularly in the transportation sector. Join fellow alumni and students for this virtual office hour to get advice on your career, ask questions, and get to know the COO of Bombardier Transportation. Please bring your questions!
