A message of condolence from Dean Mary Wells

Friday, May 7, 2021

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the untimely death of Anthony Tkachenko, a University of Waterloo fourth-year mechanical engineering student.

Anthony’s family shared that he was a competitive swimmer and avid football player who loved spending time with his friends. He had a unique sense of humour, could come up with answers to any questions, was unbeatable at card games and read legal court cases for fun. He was looking forward to completing his engineering degree, just like his dad, and proudly becoming the third engineer in his family. He had presented his Capstone Design team project and with his teammate won the 2021 HJ Kwon Award for Practical Design Award for their Solve CRO solution.

Plans to memorialize Anthony will be shared as arrangements are finalized. Anthony’s family is encouraging donations in his name to a memorial donations fund in memory of Anthony Tkachenko. Funds will be held until such time that the family can determine the best way to honour Anthony. Donations may be used for a new scholarship, program support, landscape feature or as the family would prefer to honour his memory. If you would like to make a donation at this time please feel free to use this link and note Anthony Tkachenko Memorial Fund.

We encourage members of the campus community who are affected by this news and feel they need support to contact any of the following resources:
