A pair of second-year students at Waterloo Engineering already have their sights set on commercialization of a medical diagnostic tool after an impressive showing at an international pitch competition sponsored by Microsoft.

Declan Goncalves and Zeqi Cui are two-thirds of the brains behind NeuroGate, computer software that uses sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and ALS.

Obstacles and opportunities in the promising field of additive manufacturing (AM), or industrial 3D printing, are outlined in a lengthy feature story by Waterloo Engineering professor Ehsan Toyserkani in the latest issue of Industry Today.

For the third year in a row, management engineering students have captured the top prize at the Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS) student paper competition.

Alexandra Hayes, Christian Gould, Kevin Chu, and Srikajan Santhirakumaran came in first in the undergraduate category of this year's competition held recently in Québec City. Their paper, entitled "End-to-End Analytics: Wait Time Management of Ontario MRI Services", was based on the students’ Capstone Design project.

Canada's current wetland protection efforts have overlooked how the environment naturally protects fresh-water resources from agricultural fertilizer contaminants, engineering researchers from the University of Waterloo's Water Institute have found.

Teams with ties to Waterloo Engineering took six of the eight prizes today at the Velocity Fund Finals for aspiring entrepreneurs, including three of the four $25,000 awards up for grabs.

Held at the Student Life Centre, the pitch competition featured 10 student-run startups vying for three $5,000 prizes and 10 more seasoned companies making cases for four awards in the $25,000 category, plus $10,000 for the top hardware company.

The University of Waterloo Autonomous Sailboat Team (UWAST) may be new to robotic sailing, but like every hardworking engineering team with one eye on the horizon, its goal is to win, not just compete.

That mindset served UWAST well in June at the 2017 International Robotic Sailing Regatta in Annapolis, Maryland.

Ralph Haas, distinguished professor emeritus and the Norman W McLeod Engineering Professor at the University of Waterloo, was honoured by the World Congress on Pavement and Asset Management with its international award on June 15 in Milan, Italy.   

Waterloo Engineering professor Michael Worswick has been elected as a fellow of SAE International, a global association of engineers and technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial vehicle industries.

Worswick, a professor of mechanical and mechatronics engineering at Waterloo, was recognized along with 21 other inductees this year for his field research in structural crash worthiness, high-strain-rate material behaviour and sheet forming for auto weight reduction.

A team of business students from Waterloo Engineering has taken a top prize in an international competition meant to promote and accelerate breakthrough technologies.
