Taylor Porter, a Waterloo civil engineering master's candidate, won second place in the 2015 International Student Competition on Cold-formed Steel Design.

Waterloo Engineering teams won a number of the top awards at the Ontario Engineering Competition hosted on campus from January 29 to 31. The 37th annual competition attracted about 300 competitors from 16 Ontario universities and colleges as well as judges, sponsors and guests.

Second year Waterloo mechatronics engineering students Colin Cooke, Michael Jonas, Jackson Fishe and Mitchell Catoen took first prize in the Junior Design contest.

Recipients of the 2015 Waterloo Engineering Faculty and Staff awards were recognized for outstanding contributions to education and research at an awards dinner held January 28.   

Talal Alharbi, an electrical engineering doctoral candidate, and his supervisor Kankar Bhattacharya, an electrical and computer engineering professor, were honoured with a Best Conference Paper Award at the 2015 IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference held last October in London, ON. The paper they co-authored is entitled Optimal Energy Management and Smart Charging of PEVs in Isolated Microgrids.

What Waterloo Engineering Outreach is doing to attract more women into the profession is one of the issues that will be discussed in California next week as Waterloo Engineering takes to the road for their annual California Alumni events. Two  events will host up to 300 alumni allowing them to catch up on what is happening at Waterloo Engineering and listen to outstanding professors share their engineering insights and expertise. 

Vidyard, a video platform company founded by Waterloo Engineering alumni has announced the successful raise of $35 million (USD) in their Series C financing round today. 

Led by Battery Ventures out of Boston, the Series C also includes backing from existing investors, like Bessemer Ventures who led Kitchener-based Vidyard’s Series B just last year. Adding more fuel to power the business, the company is now valued at about $350 million (USD) according to a Wall Street Journal report.

John McPhee, a systems design engineer professor, will be inducted as a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) on March 12  in Ottawa at the institute’s annual awards banquet.

Claudio Cañizares, an electrical and computer engineering professor, has been selected as the 2016 recipient of the IEEE Canada Electric Power Medal.
