Better scheduling could boost access to medical tests
New scheduling policies could double the number of patients able to access magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) testing within recommended waiting periods without costly investments in new equipment.
In a recent study involving analysis of 3.7 million anonymous patient records and computer simulations, Waterloo Engineering researchers developed strategies that increased the proportion of patients receiving timely scans to 66 per cent from the current rate of 33 per cent.
Peter Huck, a civil and environmental engineering professor and Industrial Research Chair in Water Treatment, was recently awarded more than $3 million to continue his research program at the University of Waterloo.
