Voltera V-One, a custom circuit board printer developed by Waterloo Engineering students, has taken top prize in the International James Dyson Award competition - beating out a record 710 entries from 20 countries.

Voltera is the first Canadian team to capture the prestigious award that comes with a prize of $60,000 (CAD) for the team and $10,000 for the University’s Faculty of Engineering.

The University of Waterloo’s International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Team won a gold medal for the third consecutive year as well as Best  Poster and Best Software Tool in this year’s Giant Jamboree competition held in Boston. It was also nominated for Best Foundational Advance Project.

Electrical and computer engineering professor Zhou Wang has won an Engineering Emmy® Award for his co-creators of Structural Similarity (SSIM), a mathematical formula and computer algorithm that is now widely used throughout the television industry. 

The concepts of a quantum vacuum and quantum vacuum fluctuations are still not accepted by everyone. However, a group of researchers including the Institute of Quantum Computer's Christopher Wilson, a Waterloo electrical and computer engineering professor, has found further evidence that the two concepts are a reality.

Two Waterloo Engineering professors are panelists at this year’s RAPID Canada Conference taking place this week in Mississauga.

Pearl Sullivan, dean of engineering, and Ehsan Toyserkani, a mechanical and mechatronics engineering professor, are participating in the conference, an industry-leading forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest developments, trends and techniques specific to additive manufacturing, rapid technologies, and 3D printing.
