Future plans were highlighted along with past achievements this week as hundreds of students, staff, faculty, alumni and donors gathered for the annual Waterloo Engineering Awards Dinner.

In addition to more than 1,200 students recognized for their academic and extracurricular successes, the event at Federation Hall honoured distinguished graduates in four categories and a local family for its generous support.

Ensuring hands-on education remains a focus at Waterloo Engineering is a common denominator for new leaders recently appointed to the top posts in three of its eight departments or academic units.

A graduate student from Libya was recognized by a national organization this week for his academic achievements at Waterloo Engineering and volunteer work in the broader community.

Mohamed El Badawe, an electrical and computer engineering PhD candidate, was one of four students honoured at a ceremony in Ottawa with a Libyan Student Excellence Award worth $2,000.

Zhongwei Chen received the prestigious International Automotive Lithium Batteries Association (IALB) Young Investigator Award at the 9th International Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automobile Applications held last month in China.  The award recognizes the chemical engineering professor’s work in developing advanced silicon anode materials that make batteries smaller, lighter and longer-lasting.Zhongwei Chen

The University of Waterloo’s International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Team achieved a gold medal standing for the fourth consecutive year, as well as the award for Best Poster in the overgrad division in the 2016 iGEM Giant Jamboree competition.

Waterloo’s team, made up of undergraduate students from the Faculties of engineering, math and science, competed against over 300 others from universities throughout the world at the jamboree held in Boston from October 27 to 31.
