“Nunsense” musical production comes to Grebel

Conrad Grebel University College presents Nunsense, an off-Broadway hit musical comedy (Book, Music and Lyrics by Dan Goggin), running February 20-23, 2020. Nunsense follows the misadventures of a group of nuns as they work together to fundraise for the burial of their fellow sisters following a tragic cooking accident. It is fitting then, that this comical tale is presented as a fundraising effort for the Fill the Table campaign at Grebel.

Noon Hour Concert: Bernstein 101

Featuring singer Mary-Catherine Pazzano and pianist Paul Stouffer, the program will be a jazzy exploration of Bernstein's iconic West Side Story, while also delving into his various musicals (On the Town, Wonderful Town), and classical works as well such as MASS, Peter Pan, and Candide.

The Happenstancers is the shared vision of co-directors Brad Cherwin and Brenna Hardy-Kavanagh. Described as “Toronto’s best young chamber musicians” Bachtrack and recipients of the 2019 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Performance of an Ensemble in an Opera, Cherwin and Hardy-Kavanagh helm a rotating cast of innovative voices on Toronto’s classical scene. Their daring concert program PHASES leaps between centuries and styles, moods and colours, as works by Augusta Reed Thomas, Bram Van Camp, Mozart, and Beethoven conjure vibrant and varied personalities.

Noon Hour Concert: Spirits

Spirits is piano/percussion duo SHHH!! Ensemble’s most ambitious project to date. Diversely inspired by composers reflections on the beyond, the nature of creativity, whiskey, and more, Spirits features the world premiere of a new work by John Gordon Armstrong. The programme also features pieces by Andy Akiho, Micheline Roi, Kevin Hanlon, Kelly-Marie Murphy, and John Beckwith.

Melding the theoretical and the practical

Combining academics and practice is vital to learning. Recognizing this, Professor Jane Kuepfer, Schlegel Specialist in Spirituality and Aging, integrates experiential learning in the classes that she teaches in the Master of Theological Studies (MTS) program at Conrad Grebel University College. “Academics is a way of processing what happens in daily life. Our interactions and service outside of the classroom are enriched as we strive to understand ourselves and others better through readings and discussion in class.”

“Food & Faith” Examines Mennonite farming locally and globally

The 2020 Bechtel Lectures in Anabaptist-Mennonite Studies at Conrad Grebel University College will examine Mennonite agriculture around the world and how this vocation directly impacts the lives of farmers. The Bechtel Lectures provide an opportunity to gain understanding of Mennonite history, identity, faith and culture across disciplines. “Food & Faith: Mennonites Farming Locally and Globally” will explore these themes in a film screening and a breakfast panel.

Music and Mathematics have been connected disciplines in the minds of psychologists and neuroscientists for years. An increasing number of studies have been carried out to link the effects of music on mathematical skills and vice versa. Many of these studies have found correlations between above-average musical abilities and above-average math performance.

Peace Week 2019

Every year, on September 21, the world celebrates the International Day of Peace. Established by the United Nations in 1981, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to build a culture of peace. Inspired by this initiative, the Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement at Conrad Grebel University College invites students, staff, and faculty at the University of Waterloo to attend peace events from September 16 to 22.
