Waterloo-based startup IntelliCulture has secured $3.5 million in funding to grow its agricultural technology business and improve its platform for high-yield crop growers.

The company was co-founded in 2018 by a trio of Waterloo Engineering alumni — Ramin Shaikhi (BASc ’16, MASc ’19, mechanical engineering), Michael Wu (BASc ’19, mechatronics engineering) and Cole Powers (BASc ’19, mechanical engineering). Its software helps farmers plan and track their operations with greater efficiency and compliance.

Artemis Data has raised $2 million in pre-seed funding to make data cleaning 50 times faster than traditional methods.

Co-founded by William Shi (BASc ’23, mechanical and mechatronics engineering), the company’s software automates the data cleaning process for improved outcomes with artificial intelligence (AI).

Dr. Michael Worswick has received the Market Development Industry Leadership Award from the American Iron and Steel Institute.

The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing the competitive use of steel in the marketplace.

Zoey Zhang (BASc '24, biomedical engineering) is the recipient of the 2024 Pearl Sullivan Emerging Global Leaders Award.

Zhang was recognised for her dedication to fostering community and advocating for equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within the engineering field.

Waterloo Engineering alum Linda Li (BASc ‘15 and MASc ‘19, civil and environmental engineering) was honoured for her work in STEM at the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Rogers Women of the Year Awards. 

The event awarded Li in recognition of her contributions to her profession and the community.  

A research team at the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) is using artificial intelligence (AI) to train more airline pilots in less time, for less money and in a more environmentally friendly way.

The project is led by Dr. Shi Cao, a professor in the Department of Systems Design Engineering, with support from the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

A Waterloo Engineering research team from the Vision and Image Processing (VIP) Lab has developed an AI-powered system that counts beluga whales faster and with greater accuracy than traditional methods. 

Led by Dr. David Clausi, VIP lab co-director and a systems design engineering professor, the research team partnered with Fisheries and Oceans Canada to put their system to the test.  

The Chemical Institute of Canada has awarded Professor Luis Ricardez Sandoval the D. G. Fisher Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of systems and control engineering.

The award celebrates the lifetime achievements of exceptional researchers in Canada.

Born and raised in Calgary, Keith Cleland (MASc ‘22, chemical engineering) initially thought he would end up working in the oil industry. Interested in working for a sustainable future instead, Cleland spent his undergraduate degree researching a battery that would use a cheap and available resource — saltwater— to store renewable energy. 

Cleland continued developing his technology as part of his master’s degree at Waterloo Engineering where he met Ellsworth Bell (MASc ‘21, chemical engineering), a classmate working in the same lab. Together, they founded Aqua-Cell Energy Inc. with plans to commercialize a saltwater battery. 

The University of Waterloo’s Women in Engineering (WiE) program recently hosted 48 students at its annual Catalyst Conference.  

The event provides an opportunity for grade 11 girls and non-binary students to get a sense of what it is like to be an engineering student as they think about their post-secondary plans.
