Fall 2026 Grebel Now

Built on Generosity and Partnerships

The idea for Grebel started with an invitation from the University of Waterloo, extended to several Mennonite groups in Ontario. Grebel is now affiliated with Mennonite Church Eastern Canada and UWaterloo, and that leap of faith has grown into two strong partnerships that shape the College’s identity and work. UWaterloo embedded Grebel into a larger academic community while MCEC linked Grebel to a wider church community. Those partnerships remain important, alongside many other relationships that help to define the College today.

Grebel is also built on generosity: people giving their time, ideas, expertise, leadership, hospitality, and financial support. Generosity has given students space to learn in community and prepare for lives of inquiry, service, justice, creativity, and hospitality.

This issue of Grebel Now looks at ways that generosity and partnerships are part of life at Grebel today. Together, these connections help build peace, create music, study the Bible, and leave a legacy.

Our Calling in the “Age of Precarity”

by Marcus Shantz, President

Grebel will turn 75 in 2038. Last year, we gathered several times to look toward that milestone together. We asked questions like:
“It’s 2038 and Grebel is thriving. What is it best known for? What is it doing that matters most? What difference is Grebel making? What is the same and what looks different? What are the most significant challenges we will face?”

Alumni Donors Pay It Forward

Grebel alumni stay connected to the College and give back in many ways. Some encourage others to live or study at Grebel, some volunteer at the College, and some are inspired to “pay it forward” by extending the generosity they received to the next generation of Grebelites. These gifts help create similar opportunities, relationships, and experiences that make a difference for today’s students.
