Offering Our Voices Against Racism

Tuesday, June 2, 2020

This week, we witnessed the murder of George Floyd, and waves of both peaceful and violent protests across North America.  I share the same range of emotions that so many have eloquently expressed: sadness, shock, outrage, and a sense of shame that racism and racist violence are still a reality for so many people in both the United States and Canada.

The Peace and Conflict Studies Department here at Conrad Grebel University College spoke for all of us:  We seek to offer voices to the choir calling out for justice against racism and violence, as well as ears to listen so that we might learn about struggles we have not experienced. At this time of crisis, we are determined to strengthen Grebel’s commitment to work together towards justice and peace, everywhere.

Candle at Grebel
I believe that for Grebel, this is a moment to listen, and also to acknowledge that we have work to do.  We need to ensure that Grebel lives up to its vision of being a place of hospitality and welcome for everyone.  We are grateful for the University of Waterloo’s initiative to offer a number of anti-racism and equity events this month, and will encourage broad participation from the Grebel community.  In the days and weeks ahead, we will continue to listen, learn, and also explore other ways that Grebel can meaningfully respond.

Sincerely,
Marcus Shantz
President, Conrad Grebel University College
