Two students from Waterloo Engineering are among six finalists for a $10,000 award for excellence in undergraduate research in the biomedical field.

Nidhi Juthani and Wesley Walker are scheduled to outline their research projects to a panel of judges and answer questions Jan. 6 at the Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) in Toronto.

An artificial intelligence (AI) paper written by Waterloo systems design engineering researchers edged out work by 21 other leading research institutions and companies at a prestigious AI conference.

Ladan Tahvildari, an electrical and computer engineering professor, was elected Member-at-Large for the IEEE Technical Council of Software Engineering. Her term runs from November 2016 to October 2018. 

James Craig, a civil and environmental engineering professor at Waterloo Engineering, has been named a Canada Research Chair and awarded $500,000 in research funding over five years.

Amir Khandani and Kankar Bhattacharya, both Waterloo electrical and computer engineering professors, have been named IEEE Fellows.

Dignitaries pulled up to the podium in a high-tech car nicknamed Autonomoose today as the University of Waterloo was announced as one of the first three participants in a pilot program to test automated vehicles on Ontario roads.

Future plans were highlighted along with past achievements this week as hundreds of students, staff, faculty, alumni and donors gathered for the annual Waterloo Engineering Awards Dinner.

In addition to more than 1,200 students recognized for their academic and extracurricular successes, the event at Federation Hall honoured distinguished graduates in four categories and a local family for its generous support.
