Waterloo, Ontario – Conrad Grebel University College is introducing a new summer camp that combines fun in the sun with a social justice twist. The college, in partnership with Interfaith Grand River and the House of Friendship at Sunnydale Community Centre, has kicked off its first-ever Peace Camp aimed at youth aged 11-14 in the Region of Waterloo.
The possibilities for peace are endless when youth have a stake in the future of their world; indeed, childlike qualities – creativity, understanding, sharing – are the cornerstones of what humans need to get along and live amicably with each other,
says Devon Spier, Grebel’s Peace Camp Coordinator in the progam’s inaugural year.
Spier and a small staff team will work with junior youth and a line-up of guest speakers from a variety of peace groups to engage in collaborative peace games while exploring issues affecting communities around the world. Grebel’s 5-day long day camp hopes to bring together a diversity of youth to learn strategies for justice and peace through recreation programming.
Youth will have numerous opportunities to teach fellow participants and staff members about peace issues and initiatives they are most passionate about. Participants will have a chance to share arts, crafts, drama, foods and games from their families, cultures, religions and countries, and will get a chance to formulate approaches to justice and peace that they can apply in all areas of their lives.
Together, staff members and youth will work toward a safe and welcoming space that allows each person to venture through all walks of life and learn how to make peace a reality.
If a youth you know is looking for the tools to change the world, Peace Camp is undoubtedly the place to be. The summer session of Peace Camp extends from Monday, August 8 to Friday, August 12, 2011. Full-day (9:00am - 4:00pm) and half-day (9:00am - 12:00pm) options are available with the inclusion of lunch for the full-day option. Peace Camp is committed to providing a low-cost program to make sure all interested youth can participate. The cost for the full-day option is $150.00 and the cost for the half-day option is $65.00.
