President Henry Paetkau concludes term

Friday, April 30, 2010

President Henry Paetkau informed the Conrad Grebel University College Board at its regularly scheduled meeting on April 29th that he intends to conclude his term of service in June of 2011. President Paetkau began his service as president in January 2003, went through a presidential review in late 2005, and was reappointed for a second term through June 2011.

In his letter to the Board of Governors Henry wrote that:

After considerable deliberation and discernment, I have decided to conclude my service as President of Conrad Grebel University College upon the completion of my current term on June 30, 2011. Over the years, I have come to know first hand the enormous opportunities, the ongoing challenges, and the significant and far-reaching impact of this institution not only as President but also as an alumnus, board member, and parent. Grebel is an incredibly vibrant, creative, and dynamic academic and residential community. It is blessed with an outstanding faculty, dedicated administrators and staff, and gifted students. The Board of Governors provides good oversight and clear direction.

Dr. Paetkau arrived in the midst of a major building project that saw the residential community grow by some fifty percent. The academic program has also been expanded and strengthened in a number of areas since then with the appointment of several new faculty, the establishment of a BA in Peace and Conflict Studies, and the approval of a conjoint Master of Theological Studies degree with the University of Waterloo.

The Board of Governors accepted Dr. Paetkau’s decision to conclude his service and expressed its appreciation and deep gratitude for his leadership and service to the college and the church.

Board of Governors Chair Bert Lobe noted that

These seven years have been very good years for the college! Henry has overseen a period of remarkable stability and growth. His gracious spirit, attention to detail, along with his constant readiness to put others first, have helped endear him to many. On behalf of the Board, I want to express our profound gratitude for Henry’s leadership to this point, and for the gracious way in which you have found your way among us. Thank you.

Paetkau noted that alumni, supporters, and friends of the college are tremendously loyal and generous.

Together, you are providing the leadership and resources needed to fulfil the college’s mission ‘to seek wisdom, nurture faith, and pursue justice and peace in service to church and society.’
