Vehicles that are smarter and more environmentally-friendly than current models could emerge from technology developed at a new research facility at the University of Waterloo.

The $10 million Green and Intelligent Automotive (GAIA) research facility is established today in the Faculty of Engineering with $1 million initial funding from Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC). The Governments of Canada and Ontario are also providing $2.1 million each through the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Research Fund Research Infrastructure program.

A paper co-authored by Jonathan Shahen, a computer engineering master's student, Mahesh Tripunitara, a Waterloo electrical and computer engineering professor, and Jianwei Niu a University of Texas-San Antonio professor was honoured with the best paper runner up award at the ACM Symposium on Access Control Models and Technologies. The paper, entitled Mohawk+T: Efficient Analysis of Administrative Temporal Role-Based Access Control (ATRBAC) Policies, was recognized at the symposium held June 1-3 in Vienna, Austria.   

In partnership with Christie Digital Systems, the paper “Auto-Calibration for Screen Correction and Point Cloud Generation” was honoured with the Distinguished Paper Award at the 2015 Society for Information Display's Week held in San Jose from May 31-June 5. 

Founder and CEO of Clearpath Robotics, Matt Rendall (Mechatronics '08, MBET '09), is in the running for this years' BDC Young Entrepreneur Award. 

Year one of the EcoCAR 3 competition is wrapping up and the University of Waterloo Alternative Fuels team (UWAFT) has been awarded third place overall and more than $10,000 USD cash.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) funding announced today will support two Waterloo Engineering research initiatives:

Waterloo Engineering professors Amir Khajepour, Manoj Sachdev and John Yeow have been named  fellows by the Engineering Institute of Canada. The three faculty members received the prestigious recognition at the institute’s annual awards banquet on May 26.

A Waterloo Engineering electrical and computer engineering professor has been awarded a federal grant to develop a training program that will help drive innovation in areas as diverse as automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing and healthcare.

Waterloo Engineering has named a room in Engineering 3 the Ralph Haas Infrastructure and Sensing Analysis Laboratory in recognition of Ralph Haas, distinguished professor emeritus of civil engineering.

“I am delighted the University is able to show its appreciation of Ralph’s enormous achievements in the field of pavement and transportation technology by naming this laboratory in his honour," said Pearl Sullivan, dean of engineering.
