Books not Bullets: Global Peace through Equitable Access to Education

The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), in partnership with Wilfrid Laurier University, Conrad Grebel University College and Global Peace Centre Canada, is pleased to present a lecture and discussion with Pakistani diplomat Ziauddin Yousafzai. 

Toor Pekai Yousafzai, mother of Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, will also give brief remarks as part of this presentation. Andrew Thompson, CIGI Senior Fellow, and Lowell Ewert, Director of the Peace and Conflict Studies Program at Conrad Grebel University College, will provide introductory remarks. Neil Arya will moderate a discussion with Ziauddin Yousafzai.

Ziauddin Yousafzai, Honourary Chair of GPCC; Father of 2014 Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai; Pakistani Diplomat in the UK & the UN Special Advisor on Global Education

Ziauddin Yousafzai is a Pakistani diplomat, best known as the father of Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, the young woman who protested against the Taliban for the education rights of children (especially for Pakistani girls), which made world headline news.

Neil Arya, Chair, Global Peace Centre Canada

In addition to his role as Chair of Global Peace Centre Canada, Dr. Arya is a physician in Kitchener, professor at McMaster University and University of Waterloo, serves as President of the Canadian Physicians for Research and Education in Peace and Chair of the Ontario College for Family Physicians Environmental Health Committee. In 2011 he received an honorary D. Litt. from Wilfrid Laurier University and the mid-Career Award in International Health from the American Public Health Association.

Andrew S. Thompson, CIGI Senior Fellow

Andrew S. Thompson is a CIGI senior fellow, effective November 2014.  A specialist in the fields of international human rights, civil society movements and fragile states, Andrew is adjunct assistant professor of political science at the University of Waterloo and the program officer for the global governance programs at the Balsillie School of International Affairs. He is also the co-host of Inside the Issues, CIGI’s weekly international affairs podcast. 

Lowell Ewert, Director of the Peace and Conflict Studies Program, Conrad Grebel University College

Prior to his current role, Lowell Ewert earned both his Juris Doctor (JD) and Masters of Law and gained field experience in Lebanon, Jordan and Kazakstan.. His areas of expertise focus on human rights, law and peace, international development, and civil society. Ewert has been involved in and responsible for developing regional strategies for dealing with humanitarian relief, food distribution, local development and democracy projects in Central Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.
