Noon Hour Concert: A Veiled Symphony

Johannes Brahms composed Piano Sonata No. 3 with a masterful combination of free Romantic spirit and strict classical structure when he was 20 years old.  This Piano Sonata is infused with the motif's from Beethoven's 5th Symphony during the first, third, and fourth movements.  Brahms presented this sonata (along with two others) to Robert Schumann in November 1853 as a sort of compositional debut.  Schumann called them "veiled symphonies" and publically called upon Brahms to take the next step and follow in the lineage of great symphonic writers.  Brahms published his first symphony twenty years later.
