Promises of Place: Reflections from the Emerging Church with Dr. James Bielo

Friday, March 1, 2013 7:30 pm - 7:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

Author of Emerging Evangelicals: Faith, Modernity, and the Desire for Authenticity (2011) and Words upon the Word: An Ethnography of an Evangelical Bible Study (2009).

In his fieldwork with the Emerging Church movement, Dr. Bielo was struck by the hope and redemptive power these individuals and communities invested in intentional relocation and settlement in specific places and neighbourhoods. In this talk he asks: what are the promises of place for those embracing missional values? By exploring the promises and potential limitations at stake in cultivating a sense of place, this work aims to create a productive exchange between theologians and social scientists.

Dr. Bielo will also speak on “How to Read a Map of Eden: Dialogical Evangelicalism” on Thursday, February 28, 2:30-4 pm, EV3 – 4408, Environment 3 Building, University of Waterloo.

Sponsored by Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo Department of Religious Studies, and the Wilfrid Laurier Department of Religion and Culture
