Join the UW Choir in an exploration of some of the most inspiring and beautiful choral music inspired by cycles of light, shadow, and darkness. This is not music “about light” but music that explores the relationship between our surroundings and between ourselves, inner and outer lives. The music itself covers a wide swath of Canadian, European, African, and Asian styles from Katherine Gamon’s award winning “Elements” featuring harmonic overtone singing to the vocal jazz stylings of the Pentatonix’s version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” The moments before sleep and dreams are explored in Matthew Emory’s “Goodnight” and Latvian composer, Ēriks Ešenvalds “Only in Sleep.” James Tayor’s “The Lonesome Road” and The Jackson Five’s “I want you back” explore the emotional light and shadow through pop styles, while the music of J.S. Bach explores these themes in a deeper and more spiritual way. The UWaterloo Choir is directed by Dr. Gerard Yun.
