UWaterloo Balinese Gamelan and Grebel Community Gamelan with Balinese Artist-in-Residence I Dewa Made Suparta
On the island of Bali, Indonesia there is a plethora of musical ensembles called gamelan, the local term for a set of instruments made primarily of bronze or bamboo. The UWaterloo Department of Music at Conrad Grebel University College is home to a gamelan semara dana consisting of bronze gongs and metallophones, drums, and bamboo flutes.
Balinese gamelan reflects a spirit of interaction. The music is characterized by a structural framework marked by gongs, rapid-fire interlocking parts that elaborate upon a core melody, and tightly coordinated sudden shifts in tempo and dynamics. This evening's concert features thirty players from the UWaterloo Balinese Gamelan and Grebel Community Gamelan.
This end of term concert showcases what they have learned. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and try the instruments yourself at the end of the concert. Come experience a unique world of shimmering melodies and energetic rhythms!
