This exhibition features the work of artist and cultural translator Soheila Esfahani. As an Iranian Canadian, Soheila has lived in what she calls a “negotiated third space” and her artwork emerges from her reflections on this experience.

Third spaces are the social and linguistic platforms which emerge out of necessity when cultures collide, and are key for the translation of culture. The work that is done in these spaces is a service to Canadian society, and often goes unnoticed. Through this exhibit, community members are invited to observe, reflect on, and celebrate moments of cultural translation.

The exhibit consists of two installations on this theme. Most of the art included in this exhibit takes the form of of blue and white porcelain, which has been claimed by various cultures and nationalities over time, adding to the poetic complexity of these works of cultural translation.

Launch reception: Tuesday, October 23 at 4:30 PM in the Grebel Gallery. Register here.
