Entrepreneurship at Waterloo
Where world-class engineering meets global venture creation
At the University of Waterloo, engineering isn’t just about solving complex technical problems; it’s about building what's next and bringing those solutions to the world. Driven by our creator-owned IP policy, high-density startup ecosystem, and seamless co-op integration, Waterloo Engineers build venture-backed, world-changing companies.
First-year launchpad & entrance award
Are you coming to Waterloo Engineering with the drive and ambition to solve real-world problems and launch bold ideas? We recognize exceptional entrepreneurial potential early and provide the high-impact environment needed to thrive from Day 1.
The Entrepreneurship Entrance Award recognizes incoming students with exceptional entrepreneurial potential and provides a unique first-year experience designed to help them grow as innovators, founders, and problem-solvers.
Recipients receive:
$10,000 entrance award
Up to 30 select incoming Engineering undergraduates demonstrating strong initiative, curiosity, and ambition will receive a $10,000 award to support their academic and startup journey. This will be in addition to university-wide automatic entrance scholarships, such as the President's and Merit Scholarships and the $10,000 International Student Entrance Scholarship.
Exclusive first-year experience
In addition to the $10,000 award, recipients gain access to a curated first-year experience designed to accelerate their growth without interfering with their rigorous Engineering coursework:

The Entrepreneurial Living-Learning Community (LLC): Live, collaborate, and innovate on a dedicated residence floor alongside other like-minded engineering builders and innovators.
-
LLC initiatives: community building, pitch prep, ecosystem tours, and networking events.
-
Dedicated mentorship circles: Direct access to Conrad School of Entrepreneurship and Business faculty, alumni founders, and ecosystem mentors starting in your first term.
Enterprise Co-op Award for Engineering
Recipients of the Entrepreneurship Entrance Award who later pursue an Enterprise Co-op (E Co-op) opportunity will be eligible to receive a one-time Enterprise Co-op Award for Engineering, valued at $10,000. Who should apply?
The Entrepreneurship Entrance Award is intended for students who are excited about turning ideas into action and creating meaningful impact.
You are encouraged to apply if you:
- Are interested in entrepreneurship, innovation, startups, or creating new solutions to real-world problems.
- Have demonstrated initiative by pursuing a project, launching an idea, leading an activity, building something, or identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Enjoy solving problems, learning from experimentation, and exploring new possibilities.

- Want to become part of Waterloo Engineering's entrepreneurial community while pursuing your undergraduate degree.
You do not need to have started a business or launched a company to be considered. We welcome applications from students at all stages of their entrepreneurial journey, including those who are just beginning to explore entrepreneurship.
What will the application consist of?
As part of the Entrepreneurship Entrance Award application, you'll be asked to reflect on your experiences, interests, and potential as an entrepreneur. Questions include:
- What sparked your interest in entrepreneurship, and what steps have you taken to pursue it? (150-word limit)
- Tell us about a problem you care about solving. It could be something you've experienced personally or noticed in your community. Why does this issue matter, and what kind of solution would you like to build? (150-word limit)
- Describe a goal, project, or idea that didn’t work out the way you expected. How did you respond, and what did you learn from the experience? (150-word limit)
There are no "right" answers. We're looking for students who demonstrate curiosity, initiative, ambition, and a genuine interest in creating impact through innovation and entrepreneurship.
How to I apply to live in the Entrepreneurial Living-Learning Community?
The Entrepreneurial Living-Learning Community (LLC) is encouraged for recipients of the Entrepreneurship Entrance Award. Space is reserved for all recipients of this award. Other first year engineering students may be accepted to this Living Learning Community, space permitting.
