WARG: From Pixels to Planes

Computer Science majors, Benjamin Winger (1st year) and Andrew Crichton (5th year) took part in the recent Unmanned Systems Canada Student Unmanned Air System Competition (USC Student UAS Competition) in Alma, Quebec. ‎

The Waterloo Aerial Robotics Group (WARG) team was challenged to survey a mock train derailment, and write a report using aerial images of the disaster site, locations of train cars, oil spills, victims, etc.

Thirteen teams from universities across Canada competed in the contest. Winger was part of WARG's Image Processing team using software developed by the team to analyze the images, to locate and identify the various objects, and calculate their GPS location and size for rescue workers and first responders.
