In this special faculty-wide teaching colloquium, 2011 Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) Excellence in Teaching Award recipient Yvan Saint-Aubin of Université de Montréal presents:
Teaching mathematics as an outsider
Abstract: My PhD is in physics. I was hired by the Département de mathématiques et de statistique of Université de Montréal*, probably because my thesis used some advanced differential geometry. But my education in mathematics was at best patchy. I will share some of the pleasures and misgivings of learning mathematics while teaching it.
* I was also offered a job by the Department of Applied Mathematics at University of Waterloo. But why would I have preferred Université de Montréal?!
Refreshments will be served in the William G. Davis Computer Research Centre (DC) Fishbowl (room 1301) after the talk. All are welcome!
