Systems and Control Meeting hosted at UWaterloo

Wednesday, May 7, 2014

Systems and control meeting.Since 2004, the local control community has held a regional meeting on systems and control every two years. The primary objectives of these meetings are to share ideas and create a forum for interaction among local colleagues. The meeting has successfully been held at Queen's University (2004, 2010), the University of Toronto (2006, 2012), and the University of Waterloo (2008). The 2014 meeting in Waterloo May 5-6 was the biggest in our history with over 90 participants. Participants from Waterloo were from the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering (MME), and Applied Mathematics departments.

The quality of the talks at this regional meeting is of the standard of an international conference, due to the control expertise in our region. For example, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Control Systems Society Bode Lecture Prize is one of the most prestigious awards in control systems and two recipients are part of this workshop:

  • Professor Bruce Francis (Toronto), IEEE fellow, recipient of the 2014 Bode Lecture Prize; and
  • Professor Peter Caines (McGill), life fellow of the IEEE, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) fellow, member of the Royal Society of Canada and recipient of the 2009 Bode Lecture Prize.

Also attending was Professor Murray Wonham (Toronto) who is a fellow of the IEEE and of the Royal Society of Canada.
