We have a proud entrepreneurial history.
Students and researchers in the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics have been bold and visionary creators since day one. The University of Waterloo’s first start-up, WatCom (now Sybase), launched out of the Faculty of Mathematics in 1979 and transformed the landscape of computer programming languages forever.
Over 300 start-ups have their origins in the Faculty of Mathematics, including industry leaders like OpenText, Maplesoft, RapidNovor, and Faire.
But this is just the beginning.
In the face of complex global challenges, the Faculty of Mathematics has an opportunity to further develop our already strong entrepreneurial ecosystem and build the innovative solutions our world urgently needs. With people as talented as ours, and expertise in the world’s most in-demand technologies, we view it as an obligation to realize our full entrepreneurial potential.
The Entrepreneurship Fund will develop tomorrow’s founders.
This new fund enables the Faculty of Mathematics Innovation Office to provide our students and faculty with exceptional entrepreneurial programs and supports. To date, it has supported Zero Experience, a new program that guides participants through the entire innovation process, from the identification of global problems, to collaboration with users, to the design of prototypes. The fund also made possible the Entrepreneurship and Impact Series, which brings successful entrepreneurs to Waterloo to share their stories and inspire students.
In the future, we hope to use the fund to create a full suite of entrepreneurship supports, including pitch competitions, conferences and one-on-one mentorship programs. The fund will help ignite a passion for entrepreneurship in our students and researchers, speed the transition from research discovery to real-world innovation and fuel Canada’s startup sector.
Unleash the full innovation potential of the Faculty of Mathematics by giving to the Math Entrepreneurship Fund today.
