Why did you choose Waterloo?
I was born and raised in Tehran, Iran, and earned my bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from Tehran Polytechnic (Amirkabir) University. I’ve been passionate about mathematics ever since high school, so after undergrad I spent approximately ten years working as a high school mathematics teacher – an experience I deeply value. I decided to go to graduate school and pursue a career in data science because it combines my background in computer science and long-standing interest in mathematics, and I chose Waterloo because it is renowned worldwide for its strong Mathematics program.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day usually starts at 8 with a nutritious breakfast: often a mix of oatmeal, milk, and nuts. Although I mostly study at home, I prefer working in the Data Science lab or lounge during exams or when focusing on projects, as the collaborative environment there boosts my productivity.
I prioritize cooking healthy meals at home and I stay active, including weightlifting and participating in various sports like volleyball, boxing, squash, swimming, climbing and wushu. If my study schedule allows it, I might watch a movie or a series before getting to bed. Despite being a night owl, I’m working on adopting an earlier sleep schedule to improve my daily routine.
What do you do for fun?
I participate in a lot of university-organized activities: so far I’ve enjoyed escape rooms, curling, intramural sports, and dance events, among others. These activities not only allow me to enjoy people’s company and learn about different cultures but also help me stay connected with my fellow students. I’m always excited to have the opportunity to explore new things.
Do you have any advice for incoming graduate students?
Remember, life is multifaceted, and your academic pursuits are just one aspect of it. I advise being proactive and engaging in diverse activities. This approach will not only enhance your mental well-being but will also help you develop life skills in other areas, ultimately helping to shape a more well-rounded version of yourself.
