Why did you choose Waterloo?
I grew up in an urban part of Punjab, India. It’s a vibrant state rich in culture and heritage. During my school days, I was always recognized as being good at academics, especially math. I won several. math and computer Olympiads, which boosted my confidence. I really enjoyed helping my friends understand math during high school, so I decided on teaching maths as a career.
I did my B.Sc. Hons. in mathematics and computing in Jalandhar, aced the nationwide IIT-JAM exam, and then went to IIT Hyderabad for my master’s in mathematics and computing, which was a dream come true. Most of the faculty members at IIT Hyderabad had a foreign education in mathematics, which made me wonder if I could get an opportunity to study abroad. I ultimately chose Waterloo due to the opportunity of being supervised by Prof. Kirsten Morris and the widespread community here, and it’s been a perfect match for me.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Every day I get up early to cook breakfast and lunch. I then travel to the university either by city bus or my husband drops me on his way to his office. I am a sessional instructor this term, so most of my time is consumed preparing and delivering lectures, and I also occasionally work as a tutor. I am also the chair of the Math Graduate Student Association (MGSA), which requires me to coordinate several events on campus. My remaining time goes into research.
At around 5 pm every day I head home. After I reach home, I usually have a glass of orange and pomegranate juice. I am also expecting this term, so my day is a bit more refreshing with the kicks of the little one. I then head to the Columbia Icefield (CIF) to play badminton on whichever day I can. After a few good games, I head back home, make dinner, and sleep.
What do you do for fun?
I like to visit new places and have a long list of them. Next on my list is Orlando, Florida! I also like exploring local food and events, so I am usually found attending those in my free time.
Do you have any advice for incoming graduate students?
The University of Waterloo is undoubtedly one of the best universities you can choose for your graduate studies. My advice is to study hard but don’t forget to have a life apart from that. MGSA organizes several events for you to socialise and enjoy your life while working towards a great career.
