Ricardo’s PhD research in the late eighties was a key component in the New OED project which formed the basis of the world's first full fledged web search engine, as deployed by a then small UWaterloo spinoff company in 1995.
Ricardo’s research interests include information retrieval and web mining, algorithms, and information visualization. His work includes developing better algorithms that improve the speed of results, and how people interact with the search engine. He is the co-author of one of the most widely-used books on information retrieval.
