Why did you choose Waterloo?
I grew up in Nassau, The Bahamas, and attended St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, where I obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with an advanced major in accounting and a minor in mathematics. I love math because it is challenging and thought-provoking and prompts constant learning while perfecting one’s existing skills. I chose Waterloo because of its prestigious reputation, especially in Actuarial Science. The university is also well-connected to some of the best insurance companies, which is the industry I will be pursuing a career in.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical weekday for me starts with preparing for my classes, which starts between 9 and 10 am. After class, I immediately review the material or start to complete an assignment. The actual work ranges from actuarial mathematics to corporate finance. I enjoy working out, so I go to the gym a few days of the week, either in between school related tasks or after I’m done working. My day-to-day tasks rarely vary mostly because keeping up with course material requires a disciplined mindset.
What do you do for fun?
A few of my hobbies involve fitness, reading, and shopping. Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram are my guilty pleasures. I also want to travel across Europe, explore more of the Caribbean, and try bungee jumping.
Do you have any advice for incoming graduate students?
Do substantial research before you arrive, both on accommodations and transportation within the Waterloo region, as well as on the courses, professors, and program requirements. It’s crucial to mentally prepare before starting a new journey.
