Why did you choose to study at Waterloo?
It was really important to me to graduate with a Bachelor of Mathematics, and Waterloo is one of only three universities in Canada that offers this. I also wanted to have an opportunity to do co-op, and Waterloo co-op is the best. Finally, since I want to become a teacher, the Math/Teaching program here is really unique which was appealing.
What do you like most about being a Senior Math Faculty Ambassador?
I enjoy giving tours to future students and showing them what I love about math at Waterloo, as well as sharing my experiences from when I was in their shoes.
Is there anything you wish you knew before coming to Waterloo?
I wish I knew not to buy textbooks brand new before the first day of classes, and I wish I was aware of the Used Book Store and the Facebook group for selling books sooner- I would have saved a lot of money in first year.
What do you enjoy most about your program?
The best part of Math/Teaching is co-op. We get placed directly in schools and get valuable teaching experience, before we even apply to a Faculty of Education. Last term I worked at a school that I loved and got to work with amazing students and staff members that taught me so much!
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
I will apply to a Faculty of education so I can become a teacher.
Advice for first-year students
Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you don't understand something, ask! Professors have office hours so you can seek help, and if you can't make it to their hours you can always book an appointment. Take advantage of tutorial time as well to have questions answered, go to the tutorial centre. You can even go see a tutor in residence. There are tons of resources available, so don't be hesitant to use them!
