Women in Math

Mathematics and computer science are all about solving problems. They underlie the technologies that are being developed to tackle the issues that affect us all, every single day.

Effective problem-solving requires a diversity of perspectives. This is why society as a whole will benefit from more women pursuing these traditionally male-dominated areas.

The University of Waterloo offers a supportive environment for women in mathematics and computer science. Our high school outreach programs raise awareness of the vast career opportunities available to graduates with expertise in this area.

The Women in Math (WIM) Committee is an organization of female Mathematics faculty and graduate students that work together to provide support and resources for women in Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. The WIM Committee encourages women to pursue mathematics and organizes speakers and events for female Mathematics students and faculty.

The Women in Computer Science (WICS) Committee of the Cheriton School of Computer Science aims to:

  • build an environment where women are supported in their work and studies.
  • ensure that young women entering university see computer science as an option.
  • connect to outside organizations and events for women in computer science.

WICS works in cooperation with the WIM Committee which addresses similar goals in the broader context of the Faculty of Mathematics.

Activities include:

  • Networking and social events
  • Career panel discussions
  • Research seminars
