The M3 Rock Circle Project

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science has a new attractive outdoor gathering space dedicated to faculty members who have retired from the Department.

Alumni of the Department raised funds to build the space located outside Mathematics 3 (M3), which is home to the Department. The M3 Rock Circle features plaques that include the names, start and end dates of faculty members who retired in the first 50 years of the Department, with names of future retirees to be added. There is also a plaque providing a short history of the Department.

Your many donations supported the purchase of the large rocks and landscaping to create this seating area outside the M3 building, as well as the inscribed plaques. This attractive space will be a lasting memorial to these retired faculty members who have made a difference to their disciplines, students, colleagues and society.

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science has a long and illustrious history in methods, theory and applications in both disciplines. In addition to impactful research, faculty members have educated several generations of researchers, academics and practitioners and held key leadership positions in the Faculty of Mathematics, the University of Waterloo and numerous professional and other organizations.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed and we appreciate the support of Karen Kopciuk, PhD '01, and Steve Brown, PhD '74.
