Giving Tuesday is a one-day celebration of generosity, designated for organizations in the non-profit, education and charitable sectors to make a broad appeal to donors. The University of Waterloo has participated in the annual event since 2014.

The way the university approaches Giving Tuesday is unique, in that it takes up both a challenge model and a champion model. The 24 hours of Giving Tuesday are punctuated by a series of challenges that, when achieved, can unlock large donations from champion donors.

One of the challenges this year is for the entire university community to hit the milestone of 1000 donors, which will unlock a $10,000 donation for the Waterloo Fund.

The Faculty of Mathematics-specific challenge this year is to hit 25 donors, at which point a $5,000 donation will be made in support of the Faculty of Mathematics Experiential Student Success Fund.

This generous donation comes from challenge champion and Faculty of Mathematics alum Steven G. Woods (MMath '91, PhD '96).

Woods is CTO and partner with the venture capital firm Inovia. He was a co-founder of Quack.com and is a former head engineer at Google Canada. His PhD research at the University of Waterloo was with the Cheriton School of Computer Science, where he worked on software reverse engineering under the supervision of former-professor Qiang Yang.

Faculty members, staff and students in the Faculty of Mathematics are welcome and encouraged to participate in Giving Tuesday events this year. There are many ways to get involved, including making a donation, sharing information about Giving Tuesday with family and friends or simply by checking in throughout the day on November 30 to see our progress.

You can even start helping out before the actual day by signing up on the official Giving Tuesday event page. Donations can also be made early, starting on November 22.
