Every passing minute, data is constantly being collected worldwide. Analyzing this data is essential for contemporary organizations, helping them make current or future decisions and compare past data to propose improvised solutions that foster organizational growth.
Nathaniel Stevens, Assistant Professor & Undergraduate Data Science Program Director, defines this important field: “The way I think about data science is basically answering questions with data and thinking about how to systematically collect that data and analyze that data to develop trustworthy insights.”
“We are given some sample data and oftentimes we’ll apply the models that we have learned in class to that dataset,” explains Amy Lai, a student in Data Science. “By using those models, we can maybe predict what’s going to happen in the future.”
Students in Waterloo's Data Science program particularly appreciate gaining hands-on experience through their co-op placements. “Having the co-op experience itself allows me to find what I am passionate about,” says Nicholaus Suprapto, a student in Data Science, Faculty of Mathematics. “I worked as a Data Engineer and that really piqued my interest.”
