Two incoming first-year students in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo have won Schulich Leader Scholarships, the largest scholarships for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs in Canada.
Schulich Leaders Advait Maybhate of Waterloo, Ont. (Computer Science) and Yunfei (Robin) Wen, Saskatoon, Sask. (Mathematics) will each receive $80,000 towards their university education.
“Schulich Leader Scholarships are the largest STEM scholarships in Canada. With 50 outstanding students selected each year from across Canada, this group represents the best and brightest Canada has to offer,” said Seymour Schulich, founder of the program. “These students will make great contributions to society, both on a national and global scale. With their university expenses covered, they can focus their time on their studies, research projects, extracurricular, and entrepreneurial ventures. They are the next generation of technology innovators.”
Maybhate and Wen are two of Waterloo’s four recipients – the high number of interested and qualifying students for these prestigious awards mean the University is one of only five across Canada to award four scholarships instead of the usual two.
