A year into his undergraduate degree at the University of Waterloo’s School of Accounting and Finance, Jonathan Lucki felt pulled in an unexpected direction. “My whole life, I had plans to be an accountant,” he remembered. "I ended up enrolling in the Math/Business Accounting program within the Faculty of Mathematics. But even before university, math had become my favourite subject in school and I found myself writing computer programs in my spare time for fun."

“Two of my high school math teachers were alumni of Waterloo Math, and they constantly raved about the university,” remembered Gurtaj Dhaliwal. “Their classes were always the most challenging, and they would say things like ‘You have to buckle down if you want to go to Waterloo!’”

They won’t graduate until next spring, but their startup has already taken flight.

The five founders of Gooloo recently earned a spot in the University of Waterloo’s Concept $5K Finals, where they explained their business model to a panel of judges alongside nine other student teams.

At this year’s Concept $5K competition, three University of Waterloo roommates returned home with a coveted $5,000 prize to invest in their growing startup.
